Matt Daimler spent a lot of time on airplanes. During these long flights, he studied the seats on the different aircraft to see which ones are best — which ones are closest to tv screens — which ones are closest to power ports, etc. He got the domain www.seatguru.com and began to make posts. Then he would get tips from other frequent fliers and add those to his site. It’s been two years since he launched SeatGuru as a hobby… Today, SeatGuru.com is a corporation. “Because I can count on the Adsense revenue from Google,” Daimler says, “I can spend more time developing the site. I feel comfortable investing in it, knowing that it’s bringing in money.” His advice to others is… “Good content pays! Find your niche, create a good site, and use AdSense to make it worth your while. It’s easy to set up, the ads are useful, and your users will like it.”
Dave Vandervort launched www.hometips.com in 1997 and didn’t install Adsense until 2003. He says, “It took about 20 minutes to set it up – and that 20 minutes completely changed our business.” He started by testing AdSense on a few pages. During the first week, he remembers that AdSense revenue paid for coffee; the second week, it paid for lunches. The model clearly worked, so he began expanding the program across the entire site. Now AdSense revenue pays for all salaries, overhead, and business development.
